The Goldsmith’s house lies at the intersection of the Royal alley with the Minorites Alley – today I. C. Bratianu and Hermann Oberth streets – right across the Tholdalagy-Korda Palace. The house was built between 1724 – 1725, as the beautiful door frames from the ground floor of the building also show.
This house is linked to the legend of King Mathias Corvinus and the county of Cluj. Printed in 1575 by Heltai Gaspar, the legend speaks about the sudden visit of king Mathias in his birthplace town. It is said that the king was dragged in the yard of a house on the Royal alley and obliged to carry wood for fire for an entire day. Although the local tradition links this legend to the Goldsmith’s house, this cannot be true due to the fact that the house was built only in the 18th century. However it is possible that the story took place in the house that had been on that place before the Goldsmith’s house.
