Cluj is one of the few cities in the world with the privilege of having two institutions of the lyric scene: The National Opera and the Hungarian Opera, two institutions with self- contained buildings, technical equipment and artistic system.
The Hungarian Opera, founded in 1948 by a decree of the state, has had the purpose of supporting and serving the preservation of cultural traditions of the Hungarian lyric scene by presenting the shows in Hungarian. The roots of these traditions have started to be known since 1792 when the first show in Hungarian took place at Cluj.
